Hundreds of cabbies have rallied at the gates of the NSW parliament, claiming they cannot compete with ride-sharing app Uber, and threatening a city-wide taxi strike if the government does not outlaw the other service. The cab drivers are mobilising against Uber on the basis it operates without the strict and costly regulations imposed on taxis. “We will not only stop Sydney, but we will stop Australia-wide. We will stop the nation,” NSW Taxi Operator Drivers Association president Anne Turner said. The NSW government's taskforce into ride-sharing is expected to report back at the end of next month, but for these drivers, their response could not come sooner. “You're $200 a day behind when you go to work, competing with these animals,” taxi driver Andy Horne said. “Our drivers out here...

From The Sydney Morning Herald, 13 April 1912: "One of the most successful and enjoyable vice-regal garden parties held In Sydney for a long time was given yesterday by their Excellencies the Governor-General and Lady Denman. There were about two thousand guests, and the brilliant uniforms of the naval and military officers mingling on the lawns and terraces with the bright dresses of the ladies presented a charming and picturesque spectacle. The harbour, dotted with ferry boats, and providing anchorage for half-a dozen stately v.-warships, made an appropriate background tor the scene in the spacious gardens surrounding Government House." I was walking past the Vivid light show at Circular Quay in Sydney Australia when I decided to record a portion of the show while I was waiting for my train. I was shocked when I played back the video at home. Watch for yourself. Is this a message that should be seen by thousands of people? What could be the reason? Why would the Australian Government sign off on a message like this? Who? & Why? Update: No answer yet from the Vivid crew or the City of Sydney. Update: 19/08/12 No reply yet.

OPPOSE THE LIBERALS' ATTACKS ON STUDENTS! The government's latest budget continues their assault on students and universities. First they want to cut $2 billion dollars out of higher education and pay students $4 an hour on work for the dole. Then once the election is safely out of the way they want to: • Cut funding for undergrad degrees by 20% • Bring in low income HECS repayments • Recover HECS debt from the dead • Then start deciding which courses they want to deregulate Don't let the Liberals get away with it! Come to the demonstration on May 11, 1PM @ USYD's Fisher Library, to stand up to the government's attacks on students.

Innovation precincts are a key priority for all tiers of government due to their role in driving economic and urban development. Given their positioning as focal points for jobs, services, investment and innovation, their importance is expected to increase as our cities continue to grow. However, experience to date shows that even when we plan to co-locate education, health and/or research institutions, the synergies between these institutions, related private enterprise and the workers that they collectively accommodate, aren’t easily realised. The ingredients for success include infrastructure, programmatic and behavioural interventions, and carefully designed governance arrangements. Below is a short description of all of our speakers at this event. Laura Schmahmann is a Senior Consu...
